It looks as if I may have to break my self-imposed boycott of doctors soon and actually see a specialist for the ear infections that have plagued me for 20 years.

I am a big believer in holistic and home remedies before resorting to pharmaceuticals.

I remember when I was a child my grandmother would use "sweet oil" drops. A couple of years ago I went to almost a dozen drug stores before I found a bottle. The clerk went to retrieve it and while waiting I told my daughter, "You know - I'll bet olive oil would work the same way."

The clerk brings me a 2 oz. bottle that costs $4.99. On the front in bold letters it read: SWEET OIL and beneath in parenthesis it said, (olive oil). I felt bad asking her to dig and search to find the oil --- but not badly enough to actually pay $5 for something that was sitting on my kitchen counter at home. While it does generally do the trick of keeping the itchiness and running at bay I am starting to find that the pain and discomfort are deeper.

Any suggestions? Anyone?

Your symptoms sound like the ones my younger brother has that are allergies.

He would get the worst itchiness in the summer being around grass clippinngs.

I don't run to doctors either but I think in this case you should. These might not be infections at all but reactions to things you may be allergic to.

You're right Rosie - allergies were my thought at one time. I had allergy testing a few years ago and there were none.

Although I know that even as adults we can develop an allergy overnight. Perhaps it's time I had another test.

The last time I broke down and went to the doctor with an ear infection the doctor did not even look in my ear - just wrote a prescription for an antibiotic and asked if that was it. I told him that NO, I also needed something for the pain. He wrote out another prescription. I gave the receptionist $85 - took my prescription to the pharmacy and gave them $120.

Two days later when I called the doctors office to tell them I needed a stronger antibiotic and something stroner for pain they did not want to give me another script without another office visit --- and another $85.

They also told me they would NOT give me another prescription for pain meds unless I turned the others in to them. When I became indignant and asked if the doctor planned to re-imburse me for the pills they laughed.

Add pharmacies to the long list of things I love about Italy. Last year I told the pharmacist there that I was due to get on a plane to return home in 3 days and felt an ear infection coming on. Did he have anything he could give me for it. I left there with a 3 day antibiotic, drops for the pain and a spray for the infection that was spreading to my throat......all for 12 euro.

Hi Tori

I have had recurrent ear infections - (but only on one side - figure that out!) - since I had flu 10 years ago.

An ear infection caused by an allergy will generally affect the outer bit of your ear. It will feel almost unbearably itchy, and even if you can resist scratching it during the day, you will wake up in the morning with wax and skin under your nails where you have been scratching in your sleep. Eventually the skin of your outer ear will get so irritated it will swell up, effectively closing up your outer ear making it difficult to hear and a bit painful.

An infection in your middle ear is a slightly different animal. That is often caused when fluid can't drain out of your ear and gets infected. If you pinch your nose and swallow can you feel your ear drums move or pop? Likewise if you hold your nose and 'blow' out of your ears can you feel any movement? If the answer is no then your eustachian tubes could be blocked. This can be caused by something as simple as a 'stuffy' nose. That could prevent drainage. If that is the case, and it is chronic and difficult to treat, you may need drainage tubes in your ears. These are great (I've had them), and they stop the need for course after course of antibiotics. They do eventually fall out and you need to go through the whole procedure again - but hey - nothings perfect Very Happy

I've also been reading Dr. MrDougall's newest book which ties ear infections and the consumption of dairy food. Dairy foods are foreign proteins which cause the body to produce excess mucous and set off allergic reactions in the body. Considering all the ill health that's going around in this country it makes perfect sense.

Hi everyone,

Whenever I feel as though I have an ear infection, I drop about 3-5 drops of Hydrogen Peroxide in my ear. It helps every time.

This is what I do: I pour a little Hydrogen Peroxide in a cup, get a Q-tip and put it in the cup. Then I let the "HP" drop in my ear from the Q-tip. I do that 3 -5 times. I keep my head tilted to the one side for a while and you can hear the "HP" do it things. You actually hear weird sounds till you hear a swoosh, and then I tilt my head the other way and drain it all out. Then I get a dry Q-tip just to dry my ear a little.

This helps so much when my ears bother me, or have a sinus problem, and even swimmer ear.

Just sharing.
Trish

Last week I was in the health food store and bought some herbal earache pain relief drops. The ingredients I recognized were Plaintain, Capsicum, Chamomile, Wind Flower. Always hard to tell if something works since you don't know how bad the pain might have been had you NOT taken the meds.

The saleslady at the health food store was deaf in one ear and wore a hearing aid in the other. Her hearing loss was from chronic ear infections when she was younger. So, at her recommendation I bought the pain drops and I also purchased ear candles for the first time. ((I've heard people talk about how great they were but never actually tried them for myself))

I tried the right ear first. I was certain they wouldn't draw anything from my ears since they run all the time and itch. After the candle burned down I opened to portion that was inserted into my ear and could not believe the crud that was there.

I waited a few days and the itch and most of the pain was gone from the right side. Last night I used the other candle in the left ear and it too was full of gunk and crud from my ear. I think there is something about the smoke too that dries out the ear canal a little.

Oddly enough both of my ears feel pretty good today. I think I'm going to buy a box of candles to use on a monthly basis.

No, I am not advocating not going to the doctor if you need to. But I had been having sinus problems for weeks a short time ago and finally became ear ache and I cured it from the inside by applying saline solution to each of my nostrils and I angle my head in such a way that it goes from the nose to the the ear. Believe it or not it did the trick. Oh, in the beginning it was painful (as the proverb goes "putting salt on a wound"), but it got rid of the infection in few days.

This remedy was given to me by a coworker who had chronic ear infections and finally his doctor was afraid to give him any more antibiotics and gave him this time honored remedy. It got rid of his chronic ear infection and he passed the knowledge to all around him.

You can buy saline solution already made or you can make your own, by boiling water and adding few teaspoons of salt and then applying it with a eye dropper.

By the way... my mother used olive oil too.....

Torile, you are correct the smoke does work. I have heard and seen people blow smoke in there ears to stop ear pain. I thought they were crazy but. yes it does work.
