I find it intriguing how much they have to say on certain subjects - about which they obviously know little or nothing - just one or two weeks before a book or a film or a record of thiers is due for release.

How many interviews they allow and their general 'availability' Very Happy when normally it only needs one admirer to get too near Shame on you to be told in no uncertain terms to "Naff off"!!!!

But tell me I'm not being cynicical!

Mel says Sorry!
August 2, 2006 -- There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of Anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.

I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.

The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God’s child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.

I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed.

This is not about a film. Nor is it about artistic license. This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have. It's about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad.

Good Luck to Mel in healing. A drinking problem would be hard to beat!
Cheers

Well, I think an apology like that goes along way. It would indeed be an excellant idea for him to meet with leaders of the jewish community. That's a big step .
I wish him well too in his fight against alcholism--I hope he can keep it at bay befire he kills himself or somebody else. I work with a lot of alcoholics and it's a difficult thing to beat--but not impossible with the right support.
Thanks for this Chela.

I think Mel Gibson's hateful words to the police officer represent those of "a drunken man with a sober mind" to quote a dear friend of mine.

I've known many folks who get drunk but don't resort to name calling and insults. Mel Gibson is probably thinking more of the harm his words have caused to his future bottom line profits with movie goers. I didn't like his Passion of the Christ and I will not likely care for any movies of this type of genre that he produces.

I'm inclined to agree with you there Rosie. How much is genuine remorse and how much is worry about his reputation and 'bankability'. If -

- then what is he doing driving around drunk and endangering them. I hope he does conquer his alcohol addiction for his own sake, that of his family and everyone that he offends or endangers with his behaviour. I just find the apology a little expedient.

Me too Marisa.

I like the intelligent observation you made in regards to every human being "God's child" and here he is out driving drunk and endangering those lives he claims to want to "honor."

Pure bull.

Drinking and becoming an alcoholic are choices a person makes and they are no one elses fault but that persons.

Yes - and there is nothing more remorseful than a sober alcoholic - until they can get the next drink that is.....

As you say - pure bull.

Marisa, since we were talking about Mel Gibson's alcoholism I thought I'd start a topic on it under Everyday Things.
