What do you think about Imus getting fired for his horrid racists and denegrating remarks about the young women of the Ructker's basketball team?
Pesronally, I 'm glad he was. A public figure has to take a moral stand and expend a certain amount of moral resonsibilty to the listening public.

Yes, we do not want to audit people and take away their freedom of speech, but he had the freedom to say it--now, there are consequenses to be had for what he said.
A good point was brought up on a show tonight about the awful way rappers refer to women in their music. But should they too be taken off the air? Is this infringing on our liberties? Or, is it not racist if a black rapper calls a black woman the "n" word and there fore he should be left on the air and Imus fired because it was a white man that said it? It was a clearly racisit remark on his part--and said very cavalierly Think

Is it also racist to fire him and not take the Black rappers off the air?
I liked Imus, he seemed to be pretty straight forward about things.
I could say alot about what happened but I will not. Shhh

Not sticking up for him I just think it goes both ways sometimes.

I know what you're saying Terry. But, I think the difference to be made would be because the blacks making the denegrating remarks about women will say it's in a different context and as insane as this sounds, those deplorable remarks made by the rappers are not going to be considered racist coming from other blacks.
I guess it's because Imus is white and said it that it bothers me -- that makes it racist on his part I think. Those young women did not deserve it.

But I wish it were all off the air and other people would not listen to it at all. Shame on you I heard Al Sharpton on tv the other night calling for people to not listen to that type of rap music . He also said he'd like it to be taken off the air.

I agree it goes both ways, believe me--I know there is a lot of reverse racism. In this case, I just think he crossed the line. I really felt for those young women. Eh?

Gil, judging by some recent polls taken recently, a lot of people would agree!

We've also got this same topic in World News.

While I didn't like Don Imus I feel that he should be given his job back.

He's been talking this way for over 30 years and the radio station that hired him knew this and knew it gets big ratings. He talked this way when he was a talk show radio host here in Cleveland. He got big ratings.

No one seemed to be offended very much when black, Jesse Jackson called New York city "hymie town." He offended the large, Jewish population there. Howard Stern makes all kinds of racist comments. I don't like him either but both of these men have freedom of speech.

I hope Don Imus is re-hired even though I don't care for him. It seems that blacks can get away with saying whatever they want about anyone else but they get all upset when a joke is made about them. They need to clean up their own act with their vulgar rap music that uses the f- word, the n word and encourages men to beat their women. They also use racial slurs against white people. I'm sick of the double standard this country has endured with blacks over the years. One of my very good friends is black and I'm sure she'd agree.

Hi Rosie,
You know, now that I've had time to calm down and re-think things, you are absolutely right. Bill O'Reilly called Mexicans,"wet-backs" and nobody got after his tail. I was never crazy about Imus, but I suppose the two week suspension would have been enough. I still don't like what he said, but I guess the firing was an over-reaction and they seemed to have used him as the sacraficial lamb. If they fired him, then there are a few more folks that should have gone the same route.
I didn't know that Jesse Jackson made that remark! That is equally disgusting. He should have been called to task for that as well.. As far as those disgusting rappers, yup--double standard--but because they are blacks saying about their own race, they can get away with it.

So, I will have to go back on my original feelings on the matter.
I hope he gets his job back too.

Mind you Deb, it's not that I like Imus, I don't. He's sort of in the same shock talk category as Howard Stern. Both men make outrageous, vulgar comments but this is what their employers hired them for. They know people like to listen to this type of talk. It gets ratings and thusly lots of advertising dollars. Personally, I think their talk is juvenile, vulgar and boring.

But there is definitely a double standard going on here and that's what isn't fair.

Rappers are talentless, vulgar idiots. Their horrible "music" sickens me. I'm really surprised that this junk even sells and even more shocked that white kids actually like it. Rappers call each other the n word then scream about it if we do.

Rose,You're so right about the rappers. I think sometimes people think, well, it must be ok to use the "n" word--the blacks are doing it! They are grotesque. Most of them are foul , demented human beings.

Can you imagine if there was a "White Miss America" like there is a "Black Miss America"? Yes, there are many double standards yet to be addressed. Also, there is an Hispanic music award show. Talk about segregation.

Oh yes, Howard Stern. Boring, vulgar, sophomoric humor has made these men verrrry wealthy!

I admit that at one time more than 25 years ago I loved listening to trash like that.

We had a radio talk show host named Gary Dee. He was so popular. Imus was his side kick here in the Cleveland area. Gary Dee was funny though and never vulgar like Howard Stern.
