I just found a video of Palermo and i wanted to share it with you. I was born in Palermo and my father comes from there and worked there. I grew up in my mother's town on the surrounding hills, but every Thursday we would go there shopping and visit my grandmother and his other relatives. So, it is my city too.

I found the choice of music very interesting. The video shows the cathedral (the dome was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt and somewhat does not match with the rest of the architecture). The cathedral was build in the 1100s under the Norman period by the bishop Guigliermo Offamiglio (William of the Mill, an Englishman). I see the New Gate (Porta Nuova) at first hidden behind the trees which is very middle eastern in its looks so I can safely bet it was built during the Arab period, as the music tries to capture.

I decided to show a picture of it so you guys know which one I am talking about.

I see the 4 Canti, "4 Corners" very near the Cathedral and its Spanish Baroque style... yes, you guessed it, built under the Spanish period...

Here is one corner of the 4 Canti..

.... one road crossing the 4 corners leading not far away to the sea. YOu will see faintly the marina. You have glimses of the ancient neighborhood behind the cathedral and one of the many outside markets.

There is another gate at the end by the sea but forgot the name of it.

I just looked for it and edited my message to include it. It is called Porta Felice... Happy Gate

Isn't Sicily gorgeous? I have been there a few times and never get tired of looking at all the wonderful sites.

I hope I have time to get out some of my pictures this weekend and see what I have too.

Very Happy

My Uncle is from Palermo and has written a small book about coming to America and his life here and there. I think that he used a picture of the Palermo Duomo on the cover of his book. He is stopping by our house Friday afternoon along with my cousin to spend the night on their trip from White Plains to Maine. He is going to be 96 years young in June - credits it to longevity in his family and Red Wine.

Also, my Son and His Bride are currently in Sicily on their Honeymoon. Got married on Saturday the 19th in Connecticut and Sunday they headed to Sicilia. Can't wait to see the pictures of all of the countryside.

Ciao a tutti!

Hello everyone...

Congrats Gil on your son's wedding. I will be in Palermo early november for 2 weeks to help celebrate my father's 80th birthday. He is currently in this country becaue my daughter graduated from college last weekend (a weekend of rites of passage, I guess) and my nephew will graduate from High school in June.

And now, the Duomo of Palermo... built in 1182 (more or less... too lazy to consult books and internet)... under the dominion of the Normans and under the pastorate of Walter of the Mill (Gugliermo Offmiglio in Italian) an English bishop. The cupola was destroyed by bombs in WWII and now is a sad lower quality replacement (sigh)... It is beautiful just the same. Some (Sicilian) Norman Kings are buried inside.

Finally found it, my favorite detail..

I guess you need to stand underneath to really appreciate it. On the left hand as you stand in front of it....that side road leads to a very interesting mercato dei pulci... fleas market more or less behind the duomo
