Have I really got ‘Arthritis’?
Late last year I suddenly developed a painful swelling on my left wrist. This was very hot and made using my hand almost impossible. In addition, over a slightly longer period of time I had noticed that the last joint on my l/h little finger would no longer ‘straighten out’.
Fortunately though for the last year I have my own desktop pc with its proper keyboard – but obviously I use my ‘mouse’. But since using this pc, as much as I do, I have found that I can no longer straighten the index finger on my right hand either…. and that wrist is now painful too – along I might add - with my shoulders..
Now since my illness during my move to Italy I had been using a ‘laptop’ – not my usual desktop pc….At first with this laptop I did NOT use a mouse but the little button in the centre of the keyboard. I was convinced that the cause of this pain was down to using the laptop. So I went to my doctor who said “NO it’s arthritis – I’ll send you for an X-Ray”. I went and she maintained that it was indeed the dreaded ‘arthritis’. I asked her again if it could be the PC as I had been involved with something called Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) through my work with people who used computers all day, every day; and I had even given a speech on just this topic at a large telecommunications conference in the late 80’s. So I wasn’t the last to arrive on the question of RSI. But alas my doctor would have none of it – she maintained that it WAS arthritis.
So how come so many people that I know are mentioning that they are being told that they have ‘arthritis’? The catalyst for all this – for me – was my son. He called early last week and told me that he had arthritis in his hand…I immediately said to him “Stop – don’t tell me what is wrong. Let ME tell YOU!”
And I did just that – I described not only my symptoms but those of several friends who are suffering in the same way (and ALL are avid pc users….). He was amazed. Especially when I added – it’s your computer and the ‘bent index finger’ is what I call a ‘mouse finger’.
I have copied here a link about RSI – which for years in the UK was a subject of derision from the medical profession, but it seems to be recognised a bit more nowadays. Have a look – and see what you think if you have similar problems.

I’m now looking for a similar article in Italian to show to my doctor in the hopes that she may ‘at least’ read it!
N.B. I will be posting this on two other forums that I visit….It will not – I don’t think – constitute ‘flood mail’ and I hope that the Administration of those other two sites will allow the item to remain.
