Savona is the most important port and industrial centre of the Riviera Ponente. It's original nucleus is the Fort of Priamar, which was already a seaside fortified area at the time of the ligurian Sabazi peoples, then a roman stronghold, a byzantine stronghold and eventually a Genovese fortress.

Savona was capital of the roman Marca Aleramica and, after 1000 was a port and flourishing market because of its nearness to the pass of Cadibona.

The walled medieval city grew towards the seaside and the towards the Letimbro stream in the 12th century, and then again in the succeeding century.
In addition to Priamar, the other points of interest include the Brandale tower and the medieval palazzi, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the art gallery.

The place was outshone in importance in Roman times by the harbor at Vada Sabatia (Vado), from which a road diverged across the Apennines to Placentia. In 1191 the commune of Savona bought out the territorial claims of the feudal lords, the marchesi Del Carretto. Its whole history is that of a long struggle against Genoa. Prrr
As early as the 12th century the Savonese built themselves a sufficient harbour, but in the 16th century the Genoese, fearing that Francis I of France intended to make it a great seat of Mediterranean trade, rendered it useless by sinking at its mouth vessels filled with large stones. bash
In 1746 Savona was captured by the king of Sardinia, but it was restored to Genoa by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.

Savona really looks to be a wonderful place Simy. One I do hope to visit before too long. /We still have that fish lunch to enjoy....)

I do hope that you and yours are all OK there and in Luguria in general, following the catastrophic cloudburst and landslides of recent days.
I have seen you posting here and elsewhere so I wasn't too worried. But how about Ranier? Any news of him and his family?

Let us know how you are.

It's ok here, thanks Carole.
There were many damages in the Riviera and most of vegetables and flowers cultivations have been destroyed.

Last week there has been a huge arson to Spotorno (near Savona) which burned many trees and green hills. A man died burned while was running away from fire. It's very sad. Sad

I saw Rainer posting in another forum, so I think he's fine. Anyway, I've written him an email asking if it's all right.

I'm so glad you're OK. I did see the fires too, but knew you were OK by your posts.

I've been rather ill this week, so haven't been feeling up to posting too much. But I try to do a bit each day whatever I feel like. I'm almost back to normal now and feel I might go out for an hour tomorrow!

Hopefully I'll get down your way soon!

goganga,

finally I see pictures of Savona! Thank you. The city seems very inviting and I like the fact that I can visualize you going through your day.

Now, I have a friend in Genova and one in Menton (France) close to Ventimiglia.... and you seem to be right in the middle!

Next time I go see them (in 1 or 2 years) maybe I stop by and we have a spaghettata?

Maria

Yes, Savona is very close to Genova (about 30 minutes by car) and Menton (about 1 hour).
I'd be glad if you stop here too!!!!
We can have a spaghettata with sea fruits! Dancing Dancing Dancing

I stayed in Menton for a few days back when I was 20 it is such a beautiful area, and much less expensive than let's say Nice or Cannes.

You are correct, James. Cannes is often full of VIPs, specially during summer, therefore it's more expensive.

James and Goganda,
your posts remind me how much I would like to visit the Liguria and Menton when I visit Sicily coming November as both my friends in Menton and Genova keep inviting me. I saw them last about 7 years ago! But the real purpose of going to Sicily is to be with my father on his 80s birthday and I can only take off from work roughly two weeks. Also my sister will be there from Oregon and I have not seen her for two years and my uncle will be there from St. Louis. So, I will forego my excusursion there for this time and only stay go visit Sicily and spend more time with family.

But one day soon I really hope to visit the Riviera again.

Maria
