Beautiful bird, Emmy...

I opened the photo in another tab - it did not show in the forum page.

Still have the videos of the birds you sent and look at them.

Wish you could put reins on the starlings that have been eating up the suet under the bird feeder. They figured out how to hang upside down and eat it all up in a few days.

I put some cardboard temporarily on the three sides that face the landing zone and those guys managed to peck at them and move or knock them off to get to the suet.

Next I'll try a plastic container with high walls, screwed into the bottom.

Lots of Goldfinches, Cardinals, House Finches, one Bluejay, Grackles, White-capped finches, and a big Red-breasted Woodpecker; thought it was a squirrel on the telephone pole but after we drove closer saw the wings and red on the top of the head - 8-1/2 inches tall or so. You know how they move around the pole or tree, looking back and forth. I can hear it pecking in the woods.

A friend in Colorado, above 7000 feet near Denver, told me the woodpeckers are a real problem, making holes in the house and then squirrels move in.

Emmy, The photo is beautiful. Dave, Emmy posted the link to the photo and that is why it opened in a new page. Squirrels are like mice they can squeeze their bodies through real small places. I think the size of their heads determines the size of the holes that they can get through. Off to catch a big spider I just noticed.

I showed the photo to my mother as she was going to her room last night - said "What a beautiful bird!" She said the same about the others I showed her before (the finches, which are more colorful than the wild ones here, though the Goldfinches are very bright).

I have a small medicine cup and stiff paper to catch bugs that wander into the house - they're just lost and want to go outside. There is a little jumping spider in between one of the kitchen window panes that I have been trying to catch and put outside - told him there is no food in the house and he will do better outside, like catching mosquitoes for me.

There is a chipmunk running around the bird feeder and maybe he will survive since there are not cats here now. I did see Phil next door standing and staring, whipping his tail around, so he might have spotted it. He's still afraid to come over here (hoping to have him on the porch for petting this summer). Thought I might put up some fencing around his burrow entrance to give him some protection from any cats.

This is just an update on Toots
Toots is definitely a female, she laid her first egg yesterday it seems correct that they can be sexed by their tail feathers -if the tail feathers have bars ten its a female and if they are just plain self coloured its a male. So as Munchy and Toots are not related I'll be able to let them breed.
Hopefully I'll have some tiny cockatiels by the end of the year Dancing Dancing

Eva and Diva told me they would supply me with eggs if I gave them a holiday but so far they seem to think ONE egg is enough payment (lol)

This is Eva and Diva
I think the breed they are is 'Cherry Vale'

Emmy,

Is it possible for the birds to change their ***? You never know with Nature.

The price for bulk sunflower seeds finally went down to 79 cents from 99 cents so I was able to mix those with the other mix which the birds did not care for. I mentioned to the cashier that we were also putting out pieces of bread (Italian and "American") and she said "That makes them fat!" - Figured I would ask an expert here.

I do remember seeing an Egyptian painting in a book showing workers feeding geese dough balls to fatten them.

Now one cat indoors - abandoned - sleeping now on my bed - amazing that my mother is allowing her inside. My mother did make it to her 100th birthday = got sick after one dinner where she was guest of honor and missed her surprise family dinner and one put on at our church hall. She is finally recovering after visits to the emergency room and by going back to her old dosage for blood pressure. The higher amounts were making her feel faint and tired. Back to her household chores that is impelled to do.

My daughter is trying to get my granddaughter back into Catholic high school where she was doing well - at public school in Rochester - already had her cellphone stolen from the security room.

Love those bird photos - trying to decide on a digital camera - too many tech questions in my head!

Take care all,

Dave
