While looking around the library for something fun to read, found a big book about the Our Gang movies by Leonard Maltin (1977) - all the films are covered from 1922 (25 years before I was born) to the TV series - and photos of some of the grown-up Rascals.

Brought the book to show Stan and he had a DVD with three of the films and it was fun to watch them. I don't remember some of the early members but when we were kids, it only mattered that they were like us - small. Nor did it seem out of place that the cars were Model Ts.

Now I like to see the streets and buildings of L.A. as they were back then also. Having worked down there on hospitals for years, much was familiar.

The second book was about the homes of the stars and rich who moved to Hollywood and Beverly Hills etc. A good map in the front and back covers with studios and homes marked made it easy to follow the beginnings of Hollywood by a religious couple w ho hoped it would be a perfect place to raise families and how it changed - finding oil in the area was the big thing. This was written in 1980 and the author's photo gave me a laugh at his outfit.

The history of some of the homes is amazing - some still there and notorious. I wish I had the book back then to check out some of the places.

Are you familiar with the series, Emmy? I guess Gil has probably seen them on Saturday matinées like we used to - in the company of about 1000 other screaming kids in the early fifties.

Dave

I always lived in the country and we really didn't go to movies on a regular basis back in the 50s. I do remember the series, but not much more. My brother was the great fan of comics and cartoons and if he were still around I bet he would remember more than I do.

Perhaps you could pick up some DVDs at a dollar store for your kids or grandkids - the author quoted Orson Bean asking his son why he liked watching them when they were so old. His son said "But they're new to me, Dad."

Hal Roach was originally from Elmira New York and said that he used to deliver from his family's store to the likes of Mark Twain and talked with him.

Some scenes in the movies involved a deliver from a store in Elmira, and another film has the Gang commandeering a bus from Elmira to NYC.

Remember Buckwheat, Farina, Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Jean Darling, Mary Ann Jackson, Butch and all? And Petey the dog with a circle around one eye...the book showed it on the left sometimes and the right as well.

The kids' parents and relatives were often extras or played their fathers or mothers.

We tried to imitate them = making racers, clubhouses etc. They had the movie carpenters to help them - we didn't know that then. We didn't exclude girls since they had many in the films - made sense...they were our friends as well.

By the way, it was 59F in Fairfax, Ca where I used to live on and off, and 86F in LA - only 23 here. Southern Ca sounds really good right now.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might look for some of the DVDs, but I hardly watch them. My kids are in their 30s and my first grandchild is coming in March. The weather here has been very cold too for the last few days.

I guess if you had not watched the Our Gang films in the Fifties, it might not be as appealing, but there is a lot to see and the stories are still relevant - helping Grandma keep her store and thwart the bad guys for example.

Missy will be 42 this month - haven't heard from her since Dec. 8 - and Shania is 12 - she might like the Our Gang films for a laugh. I thought of sending her some of Miyazaki's animations like My Neighbor Tortoro (1988), a wonderful film reminding me of the Disney ones from childhood and perhaps Spirited Away which is for older children -

Anyway, seeing Our Gang with an adult perspective - I always check the background, scenery, prices in stores etc - and knowing what it took to make the films makes the DVDs worth it.

It's supposed to be warmer by Saturday so I can fix some things.
