Afraid its not been a very good start to the year for Bengy.
Had him at the vet last week and vets diagnosis was that there could be signs of a growth in his bottom. Had him back yesterday and it was confirmed that there is a large benign growth there so vet inserted some medication to see if it will reduce the growth and I've to take him back again next week he was also given another antibiotic injection. Big problem is there is a chance that this could become malignant.
At the moment he's not in pain and is eating/drinking and walking but he has been on pain relief medication for his legs for a while so this may be masking things/who knows but I hope not.

Emmy,

Tell Bengy that I will ask my mother for her expertise for his health. She seems to have good results.

The cats and I are also pulling for him

I have to lift him in/out the steps to get him outside.
Not looking forward to Tuesday.

Been to the vets today and it seems Bengy will need to be going back for a few more times yet to have that medication inserted into his bottom.
I asked the vet how we would know if it was malignant and he said the only way would be to remove part of the growth and test it but he doesnt want to do that meantime. He wants to see if a few more weeks of this treatment will help.
I know myself Bengy wouldnt survive an operation and I wouldnt want to chance it with all the other problems he has. So I really hope this treatment will make a difference even if it does take a few weeks.

I sure hope that this treatment works as I don't want the poor dog to go through surgery either.

It seems it was good news yesterday at the vet with Bengy. Vet said the growth is definately reducing in size and I've not to take him back next week but I've to take him back after two weeks when he will get another treatment then vet is hoping Bengy's own body's system will eventually take over and keep on reducing the growth and we're hoping this does happen and the growth will eventually go. That means a big relief for me because the vet said if this happens then the growth would definately not have been malignent.
So its a case of keeping fingers crossed and at the same time not to spoil him by giving him too many treats

That's great news, Emmy. Surely the medicine is working and not a problem. It is best to let Bengy's immune system respond. Lots of rest and treats (he will say).

Keep us informed...

Had an emergency trip to the vet yesterday with Bengy.
and the mystery still isnt solved.
I had let them out the back for their 'toilet' and everything was OK I went back in the house to switch off the kettle and went straight back to the door to lift Bengy in -no more than 3 minutes and there on the doorstep was a pool of blood! Looked like a pool of urine but it was definatley blood (it certainly wansnt there when I let them out)I got both dogs in put on my surgical gloves and checked both dogs- not one sign of blood on either of them?? So I immediatley phoned the vet and was told to take Bengy in to get checked. But before I went I let them out again and both did the toilet - not a trace of any blood!!
Before I cleaned the blood up I thought I had better soak some up on a paper towel and put it in a plastic container to let the vet see and he comfirmed it was definaltely blood.
After examining Bengy everything was OK and he told me the growth is still getting smaller which was very good news Now I have to go out with the dogs when they go out just to check everything is OK. I thought perhaps one of them had killed a mouse or some other animal but vet said there was too much blood for that and there would have been traces and I would have heard the commotion.
I go back to the vet on Tuesday but where all this blood came from is a mystery.

I hope and pray that it is from something that they killed and not from one of them. Good luck!!!

There is still no clue to where all that blood came from.
But i had to have anther emergency trip to the vet this morning with Bengy I thought he had taken a heart attack and his breathing was really bad.
It was a different vet I saw, but it was the same pratice so all Bengy's notes were there. I knew Bengy had a slight heart murmer but it seems its gone from a level 2 murmer to a level 4. Vet suggested an xray to find out what was really going on and then prescribe medication or he could try some medication without the xray but I was taking no chances so Bengy had the xray. It turns out he has severe heart failure. His heart is enlarged and the vet said something about one of the valves pumping blood the wrong way (i think that's what he said but i was so upset at the time I could have misheard what he said) He also has some fluid in his lungs and that's what causing the problem with his breathing so vet has prescribed a diuretic and also medication for Bengy's heart but he told me Bengy will have to take these for the remainder of his life it wont ever cure the problem. So right now I dont want to let Bengy out of my sight but I'm so so tired because I havent stopped worrying all day. I'm just praying that by tomorrow morning that the pills will have helped him to breathe better.
Will keep you informed.
Emmy
