Last year I made apple and plum chutney and it turned out to be very good problem is I didnt write down the recipe d'oh! (I had just made it up myself)
Now when I look up recipes for apple and plum chutney on line the ingredients dont seem to be the same.
SO!!!!! I guess I'm just going to put everything I can think of into the pot give it a stir and let it cook!!

Will let you know what happens - if I'm still here after I've tasted it

Chutney made Applause Applause
I like it so that's all that matters. I didnt make much just a couple of jars and I know it should be left for a while before you use it but I did have some tonight and it was OK.
I've also picked another lot of plums and apples today and tonight I made an apple crumble. I had it with some ice-cream - delicious!
Tomorrow I'm going to make some plum jam. I wasnt intending to do jam but there are so many plums on the tree yet its a shame to waste them and I've only got 2 plum trees.
So I guess soon I'll be out delivering jars of jam instead of pizzas
Very Happy
Emmy

Sounds good! Anne bought some apple crisp or apple brown Betty at one of the local orchards last week. It was not as good as what she makes and I'm sure not as good as what you make! It really does go good warmed up a bit and with vanilla ice cream!!!!

Simy
This is what I did
Didnt weigh anything Shhh Shhh Shhh

Put in some chopped up plums (removed the stones)
added some sugar
put in some dried mixed fruit
chopped up some stem ginger
cleaned and peeled a few apples
added malt vinegar
pinch salt + pepper
gave it all a stir
and left it to simmer away until it thickened

I use it on meat dishes or with fish just like a relish.

So many apples and plums yet I maybe have to make some more- sorry I cant send you some via the forum to taste it Think
Very Happy Very Happy

I have just finished making plum jam and now as I still have loads of plums on the trees yet I'm off to search for more 'jam jars' so I can make another batch tomorrow. It's sooo easy to make.
I make it in small batches which gives 6x 1lb jars of jam at each cooking.

3lbs of plums
3lbs sugar
1/2 pint of water
Wash, half and stone plums
Put plums and 1/2 pint of water into large pan and bring to the boil then simmer gently. When fruit is tender and reduced , add the sugar, stir until dissolved then bring to a rolling boil for approx 25/30 minutes - (setting time should be reached by then)
I always stand my clean empty jars (without the lids on) in a basin of VERY VERY hot water for about 5 minutes before the jam is ready. (not letting any water go inside the jars)
When jam is ready (although it is boiling hot) I immediately put it into the jars and put the lids on immediatley (so far none of the jars have cracked doing it this way and if the lids are fixed on very firmly even after a year the jam doesnt go mouldy either.

Emmy...I am a newbie here, but I have a catering business so all things 'food' call to me. lolol, my hips can attest to that too. ;)

I have heaps of preserving recipes for plums and apples if you would like, just ask. Smile
Also, a wee hint about heating your jars. They need to be sterilised so put them and the lids into a 120 deg oven for 1/2 hour and remove just before filling. Use tongs to move them if not on a tray. As soon as you have filled them, screw on the lids or use the waxed discs.
You sure have been busy preserving, a wonderful time isnt it and a gorgeous smell too. All that sugary stuff...bliss!

Thanks for that tip Lynne and a very BIG welcome to Amici.
We had an ice-cream/fish&chip shop so I know all about collecting the extra inches -not only on the hips (lol) but my excuse was you have to taste things just to make sure they are OK to sell!!
I noticed my daughter had her jars in her oven when she was preparing her bramble jelly and I said to her, are you sure the jars wont crack? and here's me doing a similar thing with boiling water d'oh! I'll try your way next time.
At the moment I've run out of empty jars and I was still wanting to make some more chutney- but perhaps I'll deliver most of the fruit to my daughter and let her make it for me--sometimes I get lazy in my old age Very Happy Very Happy I still have loads of apples on my trees and today I decided I would need to pick the remainder of the plums because the wasps are beginning to damage them. So tomorrow I'll be on a delivery run to my daughter and d-i-l with gifts of apples and plums -(all uncooked of course!!Dancing )
I would love it if you have time to post one of your recipies for chutney using apples and plums etc.
So nice to have a new member posting (should really say a new 'friend' because we have all become true friends here on Amici)
Emmy xx
