Yesterday I was sitting thinking about what I would like to have as a treat and I remembered a pastry/cake that my sister used to make - but for the life of me I couldnt remember the proper name for it. When I was young we had named those 'cakes/pastries' as 'A dead fly's cemetry' I knew they were made with short crust pastry and were filled with raisins etc. After a few phone calls I was told they are still sold in the bakers - but I would have to ask for a 'fruit slice' Think Think

Do any of you have 'nicknames' for cakes/pastries.

Dont think so Liz - I've never heard of a 'chorley cake' Think

I have been told the correct name is a 'fruit slice' made with a layer of short crust pastry on the bottom then covered with raisins sometimes some spice added (something like the filling in the mincemeat pies you get at Xmas)- (not sure if the raisins are semi cooked beforehand)another layer of short crust pastry on top then glazed with egg and milk when cooked castor sugar is sprinkled on top and when cool they are cut into slices approx 6 cms by 6cms.

My Mum used to make Fly Cemetery slice.....It was wonderful. I have never made it so you have stirred me to go search for a recipe and I have found this one, from a well known NZ foodie.
