My father's Aunt Anne was well known in the Cleveland area for her egg people. The Cleveland Press would come to her home and photograph them.

When I was a child I went to her lovely home and she showed me how to do them.

The face is a hard boiled egg glued to an upside down egg carton. Use black magic marker or other colors to draw on eyes, eyebrows, lips and nose.
You must cut one section off of the egg carton meant for one egg and glue the egg to the indentation.

She would then glue fake doll hair to the top of the egg and glue fabric to the egg carton body. She used brightly colored satin fabric for the clothes. Now I must admit, I have no idea where she purchased the fake doll hair but I'm sure craft stores must still carry it. You can also add other things such as hats and also beads for earrings.

Trust me, kids LOVE to make these.

Many Thanks Goganga XXX

That sounds a great project Rosie and I'm sure lots of different images would appear.
I wonder if this would work if you 'blew' the egg first i.e. make a hole with a needle and the top and bottom and blow out the contents of the egg. I'm sure the shell could be varnished to give it strength.
How long would they keep with using the whole egg, although hard boiled, did it not go bad (smell?) through time?
Do you know the answer Rosie?

I'm going to hard boil an egg tomorrow and just see how long it keeps.

I'm going to try to find the pattern for mice my friend and I made for Christmas decorations for the table, once again they could be dresssed in all different ways.

These egg people kept for years and never smelled bad. I would not advise blowing out the egg contents because this enables you to apply pressure to the shell when you draw on the face and glue on the hair.

I think it also stabilizes it when you glue the egg to the carton.

Thanks Rosie
I agree about using the egg carton, and the hard boiled egg if it keeps like you say. I have an elderly friend who is always looking for new ideas. Next time she visits I'm going to have two hard boiled eggs at the ready. I was also thinking about those polystyrene shapes you can purchase now, I'm sure they are used in pinflair craft. I have some oval ones in my craft box and they are about the same size as an egg, may try that too.

Re the hair, there's lots of nice silky threads and some nice fancy wools available and I was thinking these could be either glued to the top of the egg or else you could use small pins (such as is used in the 'pinflair craft')and wrap the thread/wool around the pin once before sticking it into the egg.
Be great if we all tried one and posted a picture of the finished article.
I'm going to have some fun! (Good excuse for not doing housework.)

I'd go with the glue Emmy. Probably would stay on better and look nicer.

Be sure to post a picture if you do make one. They are fun to do.
