I've just managed to tidy up my greenhouse and have planted the tomato plants my sone gave me. I had just finished planting when I noticed
hundredsof ants scurrying all over the slabs I have down for walking on. d'oh! d'oh! d'oh! they give me the creeps yet in a way I feel they have a life too.
An impossible question - How can I get rid of them without killing them?

Good luck! I don't know of a way without killing them.

Try sugar outside the greenhouse. Maybe that will attract them or find what is attracting them in the greenhouse and get rid of it. Think

Hi Lilbees
I was told once they really like a place that's dry ad warm and hey dont like water. I was advised to soak the earth and all the slabs too I've had to do that anyhow before I could plant the tomatoes that's when they came scuttling about.
I remember last year when I lifted a bin that had been sitting on the earth part of the greenhouse and underneath it there were lots of ant eggs it was really facinating to watch the ants carrying the eggs to another safe place that's when I felt sorry for them I only wished they had carried them further away. Every time I see them I feel itchy all over. Yugh!! and although I've been told these ones wont come into the house i'm not to sure about that so I double check my shoes trousers etc before I go bak into the house. Doubt if they will do the plants any harm??
Emmy
Next week I'm planting the cucumbers before I go on holiday and my son had better look after them for me - I know he will only joking !

Okay Emmy, so much for the ants. My eggplant looks like someone shot the plant with buckshot. Any guesses what happened. A few of the other vegetable plants are the same way.

I guess, since there is no fruit set as yet so I can spray all of them for bugs. Should solve a problem.

Stepped out last night to enjoy the warm evening and lo and behold, the patio had bunches of small slugs. Well, out came the salt shaker and they were no more. Probably part of the problem with some of my plants. Now I have to go for slug bait which is not cheap. Can't put out beer since the fridge is empty.

Any other suggestions?

Good tip I was given for keeping slugs away from the plants was to put crushed egg shells on the soil around the roots I was told they wont cross that barrier!
If they do, it could kill them d'oh! d'oh! d'oh! d'oh!
I've got something feeding on my plum trees leaves just now, going to let my son have a look at them next time he's up visiting. I think I may have pruned the trees all wrong last year dont seem to be many plums on them.
When I bought them it said you could keep them average height by pruning maybe I did give them too much of a hair cut Think Think Think
Sorry cant help you re the egg plants i've never tried growing them.

Gil, I did go out and buy more beer! It does work for slugs. They get drunk and later die.

lilbees

(also cheaper than slug bait. I also tried the egg shells and they also worked on the new flowers I planted. Thanks Emmy!)
