I was at a Christmas party last night where the subject of couch surfing came up.

I had never heard of it but it goes like this:

Mostly younger people do it...................if you want to sleep in a person's home anywhere in the world you can look up couch surfing on the internet. It lists all the people who are willing to let a complete stranger sleep on their couch for a night or two. Each person listed has a rating from people who have slept in their homes.

Is this weird or what????????????????

Believe it or not, my friend Carol has a 22 year old daughter who did this in Paris.

Wow, I thank God for having normal children who wouldn't dream of doing something this risky.

Well,
i know that I don't have a normal daughter, thank God! (But I said lots of prayers just the same). Few years ago she went to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and Cambodia. She turned 20 in Vietman, I think. She stayed in Cambodia 8 weeks. In Taiwan, she was a guest of the family of a college friend, and in Cambodia she was 'supervised' by nuns, but in Hong Kong and Vietnam, she was just her and her friend and her friend was at least Asian. My daughter stood up like a sore thumb.

Then the following spring she spent a semester in Nicaragua living with a local family in Managua. During that period she and a bunch of friends went to Costa Rica in the back of a truck to help oversee a local election. That is fine, but toward the end of her stay as part of her project, she would go by herself in the back of a truck in the mountains in the North (that's the local transportation, folks!) to go live with local families in small villages to interview notorous guerrilla of the contra war to learn how they dealt with reconcilation. In one case a woman guerrilla was married 'her' enemy and her testimony was one of the most poignant. Big lessons in forgiveness. She did all the interviews in Spanish with no translator. She gave the presentation in Managua at the local university in Spanish.

Now she is in Maine working for Peace Action Maine, only 3 hours and half from home.... and last week on walking home, she fell and sprayned her ankle... She is fine now, after a trip to the emergency room...

Maria Very Happy

Maria,

It sounds like your daughter has quite the head on her shoulders. You should be very proud of her.

I hope as my children get older they will also continue to act as responsibly as they do now.

Hope all your wishes come true in 2008 , everyone! Banana Party

Thanks Nuccia,

I am sure your kids will grow up as responsibly as they are now. In Sicily we say: "Lazy mother, conscientious kids!" Very Happy

Happy New Year to all!

My holiday season has been strange since I have been suffering from bronchitis. The up side is that I slept a lot and did not lift a finger as my husband has been doing all the cooking and all the other activities. Last night was the first time I cooked in over a week. It sounds strange but maybe this has been the best holiday season in a long long time. Another advantage of being sick is that I have been home for two weeks. The first week was planned. Last week was a gift from heaven!

Again, Happy New Year!

ola

Maria,

I'm sorry you aren't felling well but I am glad you are getting some rest. Today is the last day of my 3 week holidays too and I swear I don't know where the time went.

I wish I had just a few more days. I not ready to go back to work yet. Usually by now I am anxious so this is kind of strange... Think

Emmy is hope and the surgery went ok. She is having trouble staying seated at her computer though. We've emailed briefly and I know she'll be back soon.

Meanwhile, look after yourself!

Maria, I'm sure you are fully recovered by now.

Your daughter has traveled a lot!!! Wow, that is wonderful!!!!

Guess what? Since I have worked the only time I cook is on holidays. My two children and I go out to eat nearly every night.

I am a member of Couchsurfing Smile It does sound weird in theory, but you don't have to put people up in your home, you can just meet for coffee. This is a great way to meet foreign friends (especially with 2 young children I cannot travel freely as I want to!!!) I have met 2 wonderful female friends from Venezuela and Finland, and we socialise a lot, having coffee, going to salsa and I did a dinner party the other week!!

Obviously in any situation you have to think safety first, like meeting in a public place etc etc. But also the CouchSurfing system allows other members to verify you, so they can say if they had a good and safe stay at your home. I have one friend in Rome who says he doesn't say his couch is available otherwise he would be inundated with travellers wanting to stay.

They also do group meet ups, I have never been but my two friends have and say they are great fun.

Couchsurfing is not really a dating service!

Judging by what you say, couchsearching is really more structured then we first thought. I never realized you had to register and all that.

It makes sound a bit more interesting now. You can't be too careful now a days.

Funny, when Simy first came to visit, I never even thought that it would be weird. I just automatically trusted her, and I think she felt the same. I had others say "You're letting a stranger come over?". And I know Simy got some similar comments (she showed up here with extra money for a hotel in case of an "emergency"). We both laughed over this a few days later when we were talking about it. But, as a Mom I think Simy did the right thing. She came prepared... I really could have been a nut bar.

I think as with all things, people just have to be careful and research their options before making any type of decision.

yeah... I was prepared to every thing... even to sleep into the dog's bed!
And I felt so uncomfortable that I came back there three months later! Dancing

Even my friends and my mom said the same comments... "Eh? Are you going to Canada by yourself and to a stranger family?!?! But you don't know them! And if something bad happens?" and things like that... Boo hoo! benedizione
But I didn't listen to them...

Mr. Green

I just saw a commercial on TV last night about couch surfing. I wish I had been paying attention. It was so strange to see...

My son has decided (his new get rich quick scheme) is that he is going to go to Alberta for the summer where the economy is booming and serve coffee for $16 an hour! I haven't told him yet that he has to go through me and a whole army before I let him leave... Very Happy
