Ciao Bella,

Nice to have you here with us....
Let's hope that it won't be quite such a 'bumpy ride' (with access problems) as your first couple of days!

I could tell right away that I would like you Gina.

How about telling us a little bit about yourself?

As for me, I'll be 56 this month, have been married almost 32 years and have two children, a boy 22 and a girl age 19. I have a part time job as a "chocolatier." I love to garden and have a long-haired black and white male cat named Benny. I live in the good ol' U.S.A., in the state of Ohio.

My parents were born and raise here but my grandparents came from Sicily. Both of my parents are still alive.

I would love to introduce myself!

I am 38, will be 39 in September. I have been married to James for almost 8 years. Born and raised all my life in Brooklyn, New York. Unfortunately we were caught up in the whole 9/11 thing. I lost two family members and 4 good friends. Also, a very close call with my dad. That was the deciding factor for us to move. In October of 2005 we moved to Houston, Texas where we live now. My parents retired in 2006 and followed us down, since I am their only child. (I have read many posts here about the war and illegal aliens, etc. and have found it all VERY interesting.)

I am in fundraising/grant writing/business development. I got my start working for schools and their alumni associations. Now I raise money for a foundation that supports an organization that provides services to the mentally handicapped. It is challenging, but there are times when I don't have a moment to breath, and also times when I have alot of free time. That is how I found the Amici/Gente websites. Obviously my hobby is genealogy. I am passionate about it even though I just got started in January. I am third generation American. All four of my grandparents were born here. My Italian ancestors are from the Lombardia region and from the Abruzzo region. I have truly found the Italian community to be an amazing group of kind, generous, warm people.

So......I am happy to be here and to be associated with such a wonderful collection of individuals that make up a terrific group!

Gina,
so sad how you lost so many of your family members! My heart goes out to you. I live in Connecticut and I know people who lost friends or relatives or had close calls. Such a horrific and sad day that day.

How do you find Texas. I viisted Houston long long ago but found it too flat for my taste, but would not mind living in Austin or San Antonio.

Reading your site, I thought that beside your sides from Lombardia and Abruzzi, you also have a good number of ancestors that come from Emilia-Romagna.

I have never been in Abruzzi, but more and more I would like to visit its mountains.

Maria

OOPS! You are correct Maria. I did forget the ancestors that came from Emilia-Romagna. Shame on me! Sorry about that!

I really like Houston, although like New York, there are issues here too. I don't live in Houston proper, but rather a suburb. I guess we came for a better life. Back home, we lived in the same house since my parents married in 1967. There was no backyard. I never had a swingset or pool, or any of the things that children have. Here, land is so inexpensive that I have more than I ever would have if I stayed in New York. We live in a gated lakelot community on an acre of property. We have a pool and lots of outdoor toys. I am going through my second childhood! I guess I am enjoying all the things I didn't when I was young. So yes, Houston is nice.... !

However, on that note....we are very fortunate. My husband has a job where he can work from home, or from anywhere. We are thinking about moving to Italy in 4 or 5 years, and then maybe some other places in Europe. We'd like to give other types of living a try. Since we have no children it is easy for us.

I agree, it has been a horrific and very sad day. I still can't forget 9/11 images, even though I saw them on TV. Sad

I'm sorry for your lost.
